Cold rooms in Riyadh have to be sized for your products and built for the city’s summer. Your stock and daily deliveries decide the size and the temperature. Riyadh’s heat, its dust and your building decide the equipment and where the outdoor unit stands. This guide takes restaurants, cafes, shops and small distributors through each choice, from climate to site visit.
What Riyadh’s climate does to a cold room
Riyadh has a dry desert climate. Summer afternoons reach the mid-40s °C and above, dust settles on every surface and winter nights turn cool. Each condition changes what you should ask a supplier for.
| Riyadh condition | What it means for your cold room |
|---|---|
| Summer highs in the mid-40s °C and above, hotter on rooftops | Catalogue ratings often assume outdoor air at 32 °C or 35 °C. Ask for a condensing unit selected for high ambient, commonly a 46 to 50 °C design. |
| Dust and sandstorms | Dust blocks the condenser coil and the compressor trips on high pressure. Plan a technician clean every one to three months and after every sandstorm. |
| Dry air | Less frost builds on the evaporator than in coastal Jeddah or Dammam. Correct defrost settings still matter. |
| Cool winter nights | Cold outdoor air lowers the condensing pressure. Condenser fan speed control keeps the system steady. |

Match the room to your business
Temperature comes from the product. General chilled food typically sits at 0 to +4 °C, dairy at +2 to +4 °C and fresh meat and poultry at -1 to +2 °C. Frozen food needs -18 °C or colder. Confirm each setpoint with your supplier and the applicable SFDA requirements.
- Restaurants: a chiller room close to the prep area takes the daily load. The door opens all through service, so door traffic drives the heat load. Many kitchens also need a freezer room for frozen stock.
- Cafes: milk, cream and desserts arrive often and in small volumes. One compact room can replace a row of upright fridges and the heat they release into the shop.
- Shops and butchers: stock arrives in bulk and leaves through display cabinets. Give fresh meat its own room and its own setpoint.
- Small distributors: you move pallets of 1.2 x 1.0 m or 1.2 x 0.8 m. Plan a sliding door wide enough for a pallet truck and a floor that carries the load.
Where the outdoor unit goes on a Riyadh building
The condensing unit releases the room’s heat outdoors, so its position decides how the room copes in August. A Riyadh restaurant or shop usually sits on the ground floor of a commercial building, in a standalone building or in a mall. Two positions work and a few do not.
On the roof
The roof gives free airflow and keeps noise away from customers. It is also the hottest place on the building. Ask for shade that leaves the airflow open, pipework sized for the length and height of the run and safe access for a technician at night. Get the landlord’s written approval before you order.
At ground level behind or beside the building
A unit in the rear service area has a short pipe run and is easy to reach. Check three risks: hot air trapped in a narrow passage, kitchen exhaust or neighbouring air conditioners blowing onto the coil and damage from delivery vehicles.
Positions to refuse
Do not accept a unit in a closed shaft, a storeroom or above a false ceiling unless the ventilation is engineered for it. The unit breathes its own hot air and loses capacity at the hour you need it most. Read more about cold room condensing units.
Installing inside a mall or a working kitchen
Malls typically set their own rules for contractors and decide where outdoor units stand. Expect a work permit, deliveries through the service corridor and noisy work limited to hours when the shops are closed. Ask early which lift and corridor the panels may use, then measure both. Ask the mall’s technical team what they and Civil Defense require for fire protection inside the room.
In a working kitchen the room must fit around the cooking line and the service schedule:
- Kitchen floors often slope towards drains. The room needs a level base, so allow for levelling under the panels.
- Keep the door away from ovens, fryers and dishwashers where you can. Heat and steam at the door add load.
- The evaporator releases water during defrost. Agree the drain point and the pipe route to it.
- Agree working hours. Night installation keeps the kitchen serving.
Access, lifting and night work all move a quotation. See what drives the price of a cold room in Saudi Arabia.
When a unit trips on a summer night
A typical summer failure goes like this. Dust builds up on the condenser, afternoon heat pushes the pressure higher and the compressor trips on its high pressure safety after a full day of service. From that moment the clock runs against your stock, because bacteria multiply fastest between +5 °C and +60 °C.
This is where a service team based in Riyadh matters. A technician who starts from inside the city can reach you while the room is still cold. Ask each bidder three questions. Who answers the phone after midnight? Where do your technicians start from? Which spare parts do you keep in Riyadh for the brands you install?
While you wait for the technician:
- Keep the door shut and stop loading product.
- Do not reset a tripped compressor again and again. Repeated restarts can damage it.
- Be ready to move high-risk food to another fridge if the temperature keeps rising.
A coil clean before summer prevents many of these trips. For the routine checks, see our cold room maintenance guide.
What to prepare for the site visit
The visit goes faster when you have these ready:
- Your products and the temperature each one needs.
- The quantity that arrives per day and how it comes: cartons, crates or pallets.
- The space available: length, width and clear ceiling height, plus a few photos.
- The route from the street to the room, with door widths, stairs and lift size.
- Where the outdoor unit could stand and what the landlord or mall says.
- The electrical supply: is three-phase power available and how far is the main board?
- The nearest drain point.
- Your opening hours and the hours when installers may work.
- The growth you expect over the next two to three years.
Frequently asked questions about cold rooms in Riyadh
Can a cold room stand outdoors in Riyadh?
Yes, when it is designed for it. An outdoor room needs thicker panels, a shade roof, a protected door and a unit selected for high ambient. A place indoors and out of the sun lowers the load and the running cost.
Will a 50 Hz unit work on Riyadh’s power supply?
Do not accept one. Saudi Arabia uses 60 Hz power and many imported units are built for 50 Hz. A 50 Hz motor on a 60 Hz supply runs faster than its design speed and outside the manufacturer’s ratings. Check the nameplates before installation starts.
How far can the outdoor unit be from the cold room?
Shorter is better. A long or high pipe run needs larger pipes, more refrigerant and careful design for oil return. Give the contractor the distance and the height difference at the first visit.
